A Study of what the Bible says about Hell

This is a reminder to all, including myself, that we must never become complacent about Hell. There are so very many today which teach that Hell does not exist.
A Study of what the Bible says about Hell.
By Rev. Jack Barr

We, including myself, need to be reminded from time to time of what happens to those who do not serve and Obey God. There are so very many who today teach that there is No Hell, that either there is NO God, else God is so forgiving that everyone will go to heaven, and or, teach that those who do not make it into heaven will be totally destroyed, that they will just have NO punishment for what they do on this earth. Such are the teachings of Satan and His Demons through not only cults but also through most of the mainline Christian Churches. How many times have you heard a pastor preach on Hell and Hell Fires?? They know that the congregation does not want to hear of Hell. And if they preach it they just might loose their job as pastor.
But then, even
if a pastor does preach about Hell Fires and Sin, those sitting in the pews are convinced that THEY will be going to heaven, so the sermon must be for that one sitting next to them, or for that one down on the end of the pew, it just couldn’t be for them. After all, hasn’t the pastor been preaching right along how Loving God is. And a Loving God would not send THEM to hell, would he??
My friends, I for one am not all that sure that I will be one of the few who makes it through the Narrow Gate. I have a promise, but Only IF I continue serving and obeying the Most Holy Lord God Jesus Christ until the very end.
So here is the study on Hell.
The following are some of the cults listed by John Ankerberg and John Weldon in
Facts on Life after Death. And by Maurice S. Rawlings, M.D. in To Hell and Back. Listed also is each group’s divisive opinion about both heaven and hell along with its founder’s quotations.
l. Christian Science, founded by spiritist Mary Baker Eddy, teaches that “there is no death.” They believe that “heaven and hell are states of thought, not places. People experience their own heaven or hell right here on earth.”
2. Edgar Cayce, a spiritist and New Age prophet, said that “the destiny of the soul, as of all creation, is to become One with the Creator” and that no soul is ever lost.
3. New Age cult leader Sun Myung Moon of The Unification Church believes that “God will not desert any person eter-nally. By some means . . . they will be restored.”
4. Mormonism, founded by occultist Joseph Smith, argues, “The false doctrine that the punishment to be visited upon erring souls is endless . . . is but a dogma of unauthorized and erring sectaries, at once unscriptural, unreasonable, and revolting.”
5. Jehovah’s Witnesses, founded by Charles Taze Russell main-tains that the wicked are forever annihilated because “the teaching about a fiery hell can rightly be designated as a `teaching of demons.'”
6. The Church of the New Jerusalem (Swedenborgianism), founded by spiritist Emanuel Swedenborg, emphasizes that God “does not condemn anyone to hell.”
7. Eckankar, a New Age religion founded by Paul Twitchell and Darwin Gross, insists that “there is no death”. . . and that there is no eternal hell.
8. Lucis Trust and The Arcane School/Full Moon Meditation Groups, established by New Age spiritist Alice Bailey, argue that “the fear of death is based upon . . . old erroneous teaching as to heaven and hell.”
9. The Love Family (The Children of God), founded by spirit-ist David Berg, views hell as a temporal purgatory: “The lake of fire is where the wicked go to get purged from their sins . . . to let them eventually come . . . out.”
10. Rosicrucianism, an occult philosophy, declares that “the `eternal damnation’ of those who are not `saved’ does not mean destruction nor endless torture,” and that “the Chris-tian religion did not originally contain any dogmas about Hell.”
11. Unitarian Universalism confesses the following: “It seems safe to say that no Unitarian Universalist believes in a resur-rection of the body, a literal heaven or hell, or any kind of eternal punishment.”
12. The Theosophical Society, founded by medium Helena P. Blavatsky, declares, “we positively refuse to accept the . . . belief in eternal reward or eternal punishment.” Hence, “Death . . . is not . . . a cause for fear.”
13. The spirits everywhere proclaim their allegiance to cultic teachings, declare Ankerberg and Weldon. “Ramtha,” the spirit speaking through medium J. S. Knight, claims “God has never judged you or anyone” and “No, there is no hell and there is no devil.” “Lilly” and other spirits channeled through medium Ruth Montgomery argue that “there is no such thing as death” and that “God punishes no man.”
There are also variations within orthodox churches concerning the belief in hell. Some believe in purgatory, a waiting place where sinners are penalized until all sins are purged away, after which they are translated to heaven. The major support for this doctrine, according to theologians Habermas and Moreland, comes from 2 Maccabees 12:39-45, a disputed book written after the completion of the Old Testament and prior to the New Testa-ment, and considered by most Protestants to be an apocryphal book that is not part of the true canon of Holy Scripture.
“The Bible says nothing about purgatory or the need to be purged after death,” Ankerberg and Weldon say. “Rather, the Bible claims that Christ himself did all that was necessary to earn our joyous entrance into God’s presence at death. Paul states in Philippians 3:9 that his right standing with God was not some-thing he earned or secured through acts of penance or repara-tion” [and in Phil. 1:21 and 2 Cor. 5:8], “that at death, we who are believers in Christ immediately go to be in Christ’s presence.”
End of quotes.

And in answer to a question that I received.
It is so good to hear from you again.
On your questions about Hell. Yes there are
different parts, and different punishments (Luke 12:47-48). The Bible tells us that there are Chambers (Pr 7:27), a pit or many pits (Isa. 14:15; Ezek. 31:16), has a part called Outer Darkness (Mt. 22:13; 25:30), has a bottomless Pit (Rev. 9:1-2), has a Mouth (Isa. 5:14), has a belly (Jonah 2:2), has a part called the Lowest Hell (De. 32:22; Ps 86:13), keeps enlarging itself (Isa. 5:14), has Chains (2 Pe. 2:4; Jude 1:6).
Yes it will matter in the end, for the degree of punishment one receives will be for All of Eternity. Different sins evidently will have different punishments in this sense, If you do not know that you are committing a sin, such as someone in a remote part of the world, or raised in a country where a false religion is the norm, then they will be beaten with few stripes (Luke 12:47). They will be punished but not as severely as someone who knows Christ and then goes back to sinning without repenting (Luke 12:48), for they now know what a sin is so there is no excuse, they will be punished very severely. The Unprofitable Servant of Christ, (one who produces nothing for the Lord) and the one who pretends to be a Christian (Mt. 25:30; 22:13) will be thrown into a special place called Outer Darkness.
Why is Paradise in Hades (Hell)? The reason that Paradise was in Hell, was that No One could enter Heaven without accepting Jesus Christ. So God set up a holding place for the godly.
Acts 4:10, 12 “
Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, .. . . . Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved”.
And they could not accept Jesus until Jesus paid the price for all the O. T. saints as well as us. Nobody could enter heaven until Jesus Rose from the dead, so all of the O. T. saints were held in Paradise until that time. During the three days that Jesus was in the grave, Jesus went down into Hell and preached to the prisoners there. The O. T. saints, not the ones being punished on the other side of Hell. When Jesus came out of the grave, so did many of the O. T. Saints. This place was done away with when we could enter Heaven directly.
From the above paragraph you can see why Paradise was not in Heaven where God resides.
As to where the final heaven will be, I do not know. I do know that God will take up residence in New Jerusalem on the New Earth. If you want to call that heaven, it is alright with me. Your guess is as good as anyone else’s. The Bible does not say.
I include the following references that may help you. I have included some notes in blue.

Derived from the Saxon helan, to cover; hence the covered or the invisible place. In Scripture there are three words so rendered:
1. Sheol, occurring in the Old Testament sixty-five times. This word sheol is derived from a root-word meaning “to ask, ” “demand; “hence insatiableness #Pr 30:15,16 It is rendered “grave” thirty-one times #Ge 37:35 42:38 44:29,31 1Sa 2:6 etc. The Revisers have retained this rendering in the historical books with the original word in the margin, while in the poetical books they have reversed this rule. In thirty-one cases in the Authorized Version this word is rendered “hell, “the place of disembodied spirits. The inhabitants of sheol are “the congregation of the dead” #Pr 21:16 It is:
a. the abode of the wicked #Nu 16:33 Job 24:19 Ps 9:17 31:17 etc.;
b. of the good #Ps 16:10 30:3 49:15 86:13 etc. Sheol is described as:
Hell was divided into two main parts, The wicked to one part, and the good to a different part. The wicked being punished, the good just being held without punishment – see story in Luke 16:19-31 “The rich man and Lazarus”.
a. deep #Job 11:8
b. dark #Job 10:21,22
c. with bars #Job 17:16
d. The dead “go down” to it #Nu 16:30,33 Eze 31:15,16,17
The Bible constantly points to Hell being deep within the Earth.
2. The Greek word hades of the New Testament has the same scope of signification as sheol of the Old Testament. It is a prison #1Pe 3:19 with gates and bars and locks #Mt 16:18 Re 1:18 and it is downward #Mt 11:23 Lu 10:15 The righteous and the wicked are separated. The blessed dead are in that part of hades called paradise #Lu 23:43 They are also said to be in Abraham’s bosom #Lu 16:22
The terms “Paradise” and “Abraham’s Bosom” are used interchangeably to reference to that part of Hell which held the good. They were held there as prisoners until Jesus died on the cross and went down to preach to the “Prisoners”, after which they came out of Hell. They were held there because they all had to wait until Jesus died for us, for it is only by and through Jesus Christ that anyone can enter heaven. Jesus told the thief on the cross that the thief would be with Him in Paradise that day, Not in Heaven, in Paradise. >From the time that Jesus rose from the dead, that part of Hell has never been used to hold the Good, for the Good now can enter directly into Heaven.
3. Gehenna, in most of its occurrences in the Greek New Testament, designates the place of the lost #Mt 23:33 The fearful nature of their condition there is described in various figurative expressions #Mt 8:12 13:42 22:13 25:30 Lu 16:24 etc.
Greek, Gehenna), The place of Punishment-
 #Mt 5:22,29 10:28 18:9 23:15,33 Mk 9:43 Lu 12:5
 #Jas 3:6
Gr. basanos #Mt 4:24 the “touch-stone” of justice; hence inquisition by torture, and then any disease which racks and tortures the limbs.

See HINNOM 24790
A deep, narrow ravine separating Mount Zion from the so-called “Hill of Evil Counsel.” It took its name from “some ancient hero, the son of Hinnom.” It is first mentioned in #Jos 15:8 It had been the place where the idolatrous Jews burned their children alive to Moloch and Baal. A particular part of the valley was called Tophet, or the “fire-stove, “where the children were burned. After the Exile, in order to show their abhorrence of the locality, the Jews made this valley the receptacle of the offal of the city, for the destruction of which a fire was, as is supposed, kept constantly burning there. The Jews associated with this valley these two ideas,
1. that of the sufferings of the victims that had there been sacrificed; and
2. that of filth and corruption. It became thus to the popular mind a symbol of the abode of the wicked hereafter. It came to signify hell as the place of the wicked. “It might be shown by infinite examples that the Jews expressed hell, or the place of the damned, by this word. The word Gehenna [the Greek contraction of Hinnom] was never used in the time of Christ in any other sense than to denote the place of future punishment.” About this fact there can be no question. In this sense the word is used eleven times in our Lord’s discourses #Mt 23:33 Lu 12:5 Mt 5:22 &c.
Matthew 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
Luke 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
Matthew 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
